Congratulations to the Henry Sibley High School baseball team, which captured the Class AAA State Championship with an 8-4 victory over Mahtomedi at Target Field on Monday. Henry Sibley completes the 2015-16 season with a 15-15 overall record, but won 11 of their final 12 games en route the state title – a true “cinderella story”.

The state championship is the second for the Henry Sibley baseball program, which previously won in 1994. It was also the first team title in any sport for the Warriors since the girls’ soccer team brought back a state championship in 1997.

Congratulations as well to Charley Hesse, Sam Gantman and Joe Ihrke, who were each named to the Class AAA All-Tournament Team.

The baseball state championship caps off an excellent year for Henry Sibley athletics, which saw state qualifiers in dance team, boys swimming, boys and girls cross country, girls nordic skiing, boys track and field, gymnastics, wrestling and boys golf. Sophomore gymnast Sophie Redding won an individual state title for the Warriors in February, when she claimed first place in the Vault. Meanwhile, senior golfer Scott Fudenberg placed third at the Class AAA State Golf Meet on June 15.
